Proposal was approved. The site specific installation, deconstructing Yukio Mishima House (where the author lived in his teens and early twenties) into artwork, collaborated with the architect.  This meeting was held in Naoshima, with Mr. Soichiro Fukutake and Mr. Furamu Kitagawa.

Inujima Project on-site explanatory meeting was held at Inujima Community House.  Mr. Fukutake talked about the vision of the project, followed by the architect, Mr. Sanbuichi and the artist, Yanagi’s presentations.  Yanagi also talked about one of his recent projects in Hiroshima, called “Kyu-Nakakojo Art Center Plan”.  In the following open discussion with the local residents, issues on depopulation and super-aging society were discussed in particular.  TV Asahi crew came to cover this meeting.  The construction was scheduled to start in February, 2007.

The 12th Inujima Project Regular Meeting


Construction was confirmed to start within 2007 and the budget was fixed.  Construction was scheduled to last for 14 months.  Meeting with the city for the explanation of the project.  Inujima on-site explanatory meeting was scheduled in December.

The 11th Inujima Project Regular Meeting


Sanbuichi’s architecture and Yanagi’s artwork plans were presented to the construction officials. Construction expected to begin within this year.  The very first step of Inujima Project was taken.

Irregular meeting on the grand design and the first phase construction.  Due to the reason caused by the damage of the chimney, the first phase construction’s details were largely modified.  Mr. Sanbuichi presented a new plan utilizing chimney effect on Icarus Tower in Industrial Ruins Preservation Site.  The museum proposed in this plan  consisted of four spaces, Earth Hall, Energy Hall, Sun Canopy and Gallery Terrace, all with the installations of Yanagi’s works.  Power Station Site would be included in the 2nd  phase construction.

As the first phase construction, Power Station and Control Center were planned to complete.  Approved by the city planning law and building codes.

Irregular meeting in Naoshima.  Mr. Sanbuichi and Yanagi proposed a new grand design called “Setouchi Natural Energy Applied Art Island Plan”, as an extended and developed plan of Yanagi’s previous proposals, “Former Inujima Copper Refinery Garden Museum Proposal”, “Former Inujima Copper Refinery Revitalization Plan” (1995), “Inujima Project Grand Design” (2001), “Revitalization of Industrial Ruins by Art” and “Revitalization Plan-Power Station” (2004).

Mr. Hiroshi Sanbuichi was officially announced as a collaborative architect.  Started to apply for construction permit from government.

The 8th Inujima Project Regular Meeting was held in Inujima, with local residents under cherry-blossoms.  Mr. Furamu Kitagawa, the general director of Echigio-Tsumari Art Triennale, joined the meeting.

Project’s ideas were discussed from the management’s perspective.  The idea to use natural energy was highly appreciated, and Mr. Hiroshi Sanbuichi was approved as a collaborative architect.

After the 2nd World Cultural Forum in Osaka, organized by the Agency of Cultural Affairs, the participants made a visit to Naoshima to hold Naoshima Conference 7., in which Yanagi gave a presentation on Inujima Project.

The 5th Inujima Project Regular Meeting.


Yanagi proposed a plan in which he would employ the hill with the copper refinery ruins as the site, comparing the masculine ruins in east to the feminine pond and village in west.  In the light of the fact that the native trees near Power Station were cut down, Yanagi proposed a plan whose concept was “utilizing the existing ones effectively.”

Okayama Office was relocated to downtown Okayama City.  The owner of a building B-Sankyo, kindly offered the artist to use his unoccupied 3rd floor as Inujima Project office.

Artist’s studio was completed in Itoshima, facing Sea of Genkai, in Fukuoka, the artist’s hometown.  Artist designed this studio by himself, introducing passive solar system and geothermal system.

In 2001, Mr. Fukutake purchased the land of approximate 100,000㎡ as planned site for Inujima Project.  By his purchase, there would be no possibility of industrial waste’s carried-in to Inujima.  Inujima Project’s grand design was planned.

Moved from New York to San Francisco.  This new studio in Bay area was located in former AF.  Started to move back and forth between Seto Island Sea and West Coast, across the Pacific.

Learned that Mr. Fukutake owns the dismantled house Yukio Mishima lived during his teens and twenties (Shoto, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.)  Asked Mr. Fukutake if the house could be used in artist’s project.  In May, received an offer to use the house for House Project in Naoshima.

Meeting with Okayama Pref. governor Shiro Nagano under the auspices of Mr. Fukutake.  Handed a copy of “Inujima Copper Refinery Ruins Garden Museum Grand Design”, and explained Inujima Project and its future cultural use to Mr. Nagano.  Another meeting with Mr. Kanichi Motohama, Okayama Pref. congressman, who was related to waste disposal issues.  Mr. Motoyama gave some details on possible waste disposal in Inujima.  Artist explained cultural value of quarry in return.  Meeting with Okayama City’s board of education to explain the project.

Inujima Project’s first draft “Inujima Copper Refinery Ruins Garden Museum Grand Design” was shown to Mr. Fukutake, Benesse Corporation.  Meeting with the owner of the land to ask the possibility of land tenancy.  Learned that there’s a plan to bury the former-quarry pond on the site with industrial waste.

Inujima Project “Concept”

Hit the idea of an art project with the concept “rebirth”—to transform the abandoned  buildings into artworks, at the very first sight of this copper refinery ruins.  Also, developed the idea of “Pacific” series, at the same time.

On December 6, first visit to Inujima.

Looked at the rising sun from the hill on the copper refinery ruins, after one night in a sail boat at Inujima port.  Impressed with the contrast between the modernization ruins on the eastern hill and the former-quarry pond and the village on the western hill.

Solo exhibition at Peter Blum, New York. Exhibited works were “Chrysanthemum Carpet” and the site-specific installation with borrowing texts from “Voices of the heroic deads” and “Sun and Steel” by Yukio Mishima.
